Initiatives supporting hydrogen in NSW

Hydrogen Refuelling Network

The NSW Government is promoting hydrogen as a clean and sustainable fuel for the future and has committed $20 million to the project. It is expected to be completed in late 2025.4

NSW has partnered with Victoria to develop the Hume Hydrogen Highway, a network of hydrogen refuelling stations along the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne which will:

  • deliver a network of at least four hydrogen refuelling stations along the Hume Highway
  • support a fleet of at least 25 hydrogen-powered linehaul trucks using the network
  • demonstrate the potential of renewable hydrogen to shift the heavy transport sector.

Hydrogen Hub Initiative

The Hydrogen Hub Initiative is a $70 million program that supports the development of hydrogen hubs in NSW.5 Hydrogen hubs are areas where the production and use of green hydrogen for industrial, transportation, and energy markets are concentrated. The initiative aims to:

  • unlock a green hydrogen industry and workforce to transform our regional economies and prepare NSW for the future as global markets decarbonise
  • reduce the cost of hydrogen infrastructure development and supply chain costs to make hydrogen commercially competitive with existing fuels
  • create new jobs, encourage innovation, improve energy security, and give businesses more choices to increase revenue while reducing emissions
