Public passenger vehicle statistics

From 1 November 2017, the Point to Point Transport Act 2016 and Point to Point Transport Regulation 2017 provided a new regulatory framework for passenger services undertaken in any vehicle with 12 seats or less (including the driver). These include taxis, private hire vehicles (including ride sharing) and some buses.

Driver Authorities

The turnaround times provided are an average of the total Driver Authorities issued during the month.

When errors occur in the paperwork submitted, Transport for NSW cannot process the application in the usual time. If a customer has an adverse traffic history or criminal record additional steps in the process need to be completed, such as adjudication.

Checks where Transport for NSW relies on external agencies can also affect turnaround times.

Please note: If the historical date for 'Plate on Hold' is not available then this plate is included in the days on hold>365 count.

Note on revised methodology:

We publish taxi plate statistics for ‘Taxi Plates on Hold – Days on Hold’ based on ‘T Plates on hold’ and ‘TC Plates on hold’ to better align our current published statistics methodology to the Point to Point Transport Commissioner category definitions. T plates are issued to taxis operating in the Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong transport districts. TC plates are issued to taxis operating in all non-metropolitan areas in NSW i.e. not operating in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong transport districts. Prior to June 2020, the previous published statistics methodology for Taxi Plates on Hold -– Days on Hold was based on postcode information of the owner (as opposed to the operating transport district).

If you have any questions on the current methodology please contact the Insights and Analytics Unit, Transport for NSW:

InsightsAnalytics@transport.nsw.gov.au

Please refer to the Historical figures spreadsheet (XLSX, 54.8 KB) for further historical data related to Taxi Plates on Hold under the current and previous methodologies.

* PT = A PT licence code is a code on a NSW driver licence that identifies drivers who meet licence and medical standards required to drive a point to point vehicle or certain public passenger services under relevant transport legislation.

Source DRIVES as at 31 March 2024

Disclaimer

From 1 November 2017, the Point to Point Transport Act 2016 and Point to Point Transport Regulation 2017 provided a new regulatory framework for passenger services undertaken in any vehicle with 12 seats or less (including the driver). These include taxis, private hire vehicles (including ride sharing) and some buses. More information on point to point transport is available at www.pointtopoint.nsw.gov.au.

As the regulator for the licensing of drivers and registration of vehicles, Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) manages the issuance of registration plates to point to point vehicles and ensures drivers meet required licensing standards. TfNSW publishes monthly statistics for taxi registration plates, taxi registration plates on hold, and relevant driver licence information for the information of the point to point industry and the general public.
