Jun 2020 - Intersection improvements completed

Transport for NSW has recently completed improvements to the intersection of Taren Point Road, The Boulevarde and Captain Cook Drive, Caringbah.

The work involved widening Taren Point Road to provide an additional right turn lane onto The Boulevarde and the construction of a new central median island. We also upgraded the pedestrian crossings at the intersection to make them safer for all users, including students at Endeavour Sports High School and Caringbah High School.

A large part of the work was the relocation of gas, water, telecommunications and electrical utilities, including Ausgrid power poles around the intersection. For more information please view or download the June 2020 project update (PDF, 500Kb).

Project information

Background

In May 2018, Roads and Maritime Services announced a project to improve the intersection of Taren Point Road, The Boulevarde and Captain Cook Drive in Caringbah. This followed investigation work that took place from September 2017 to March 2018. Construction work began in February 2019.

Key features

Around 70,000 road users pass through this intersection on an average day, many of them turning right from Taren Point Road onto The Boulevarde to head towards Miranda, Gymea and Sutherland.

Congestion in the existing right-turn lane can result in queuing during the AM and PM peak periods, causing delays for motorists travelling through the intersection. Roads and Maritime will be widening Taren Point Road to provide an additional right turn lane. This will allow more vehicles to travel through the intersection during each traffic light phase.

The work includes:

  • widening Taren Point Road to include an additional right turn lane southbound into The Boulevarde
  • realigning the north-west corner of the intersection to allow for road widening, including relocating and widening the existing pedestrian crossing and kerb ramps on The Boulevarde
  • relocating existing utilities on the south-west corner of the intersection, including replacing existing footpaths and fencing
  • altering the two signalised pedestrian crossings on Taren Point Road, at the northern and southern ends of the intersection, to correspond with the road widening
  • tree removal, trimming and landscaping
  • road resurfacing and adjusting road marking.

Benefits

The key benefits to the community include:

  • Improved journey times for road users heading from the north towards Miranda, Gymea and Sutherland
  • Easing congestion for through-traffic on Taren Point
  • Improved safety for students from Endeavour Sports and Caringbah high schools, as well as other pedestrians.

Removal and replacement of trees

The work required that we remove trees along the Endeavour Sports High fenceline. We know how important these are to the school and the local community, so we’ll be working with the school to ensure they are replaced. And we’ll go one better: for every tree we removed, we’ll plant two.

Next steps

The Ausgrid ban on live electrical work is affecting all aspects of construction (see the ‘Updates and announcements’ section, above). In the meantime, we are working to complete as much of the project as possible so we can minimise delays. We will keep Endeavour Sports and Caringbah high schools advised of progress and of the outcome of Ausgrid’s work ban. We will keep local residents and other updated via the project webpage and email. If you wish to receive email updates, please contact our delivery partner – nswenquiries@vbajv.com.au.
