Airport Precinct Safety and Access Program

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW is delivering road improvements in the Airport Precinct that will make roads safer, reduce traffic, and improve access to important locations in the area.

Project information

Background

The NSW and Australian Governments creating one of Australia's largest infrastructure and city shaping programs, the 11,200-hectare Western Sydney International Airport Precinct, which will transform the area into a thriving cultural, social and economic hub.

With so much work underway and the high rate of growth within the Precinct, there has been significant impact to the existing road network, which was originally designed to support a rural community.

The existing road network consists of narrow, winding roads that will become unsuitable over time due to the increasing traffic volumes caused by the construction of the Western Sydney International Airport (WSIA), development of new neighbourhoods, and transition of rural areas into urbanised communities.

As a result, the road network will become increasingly congested, so Transport for NSW is working on improvements to ensure safety, reliability, and accessibility to support the growing community.

What’s happening

The NSW Government has allocated $52.6 million for six projects in the Airport Precinct (including intersection upgrades and safety improvements) that will improve road safety, traffic and access. These projects were chosen based on community and stakeholder feedback.

Most of the projects are expected to commence delivery in 2026 and be completed by early 2027. Some minor linemarking and road signage upgrades are expected to be complete by late 2025.

Projects:

  • Installing traffic lights, turning lanes and a traffic island at the intersection of Luddenham Road and Elizabeth Drive
  • Adding a right-hand turn lane and widening the road at the intersection of Mamre Road and Kerrs Road to support truck movements
  • Improving the Elizabeth Drive/Mamre Road roundabout for drivers travelling west (including lane widening, new pavement and kerb reconstruction)
  • Extending the shared path along the southern side of Badgerys Creek Road, from The Northern Road to the proposed southern entry of Bradfield City
  • Upgrades to signs, linemarking and minor improvements on roads across the Airport Precinct
  • New CCTV to improve incident management within the Airport Precinct

These projects are in addition to other significant projects across the Precinct including:

  • The toll free M12 Motorway
  • Mamre Road Stage 2 (between Kerrs Road and Erskine Park Road)
  • Fifteenth Avenue Upgrade (between Devonshire Road and Cowpasture Road)
  • Elizabeth Drive Upgrade – Priority Sections (between Devonshire Road towards Badgerys Creek Road)

Transport for NSW has reviewed all the feedback to its survey on roads in the Airport Precinct, and published a report summarising and responding to the main themes identified in the feedback received. You can view the report here (PDF, 1021.87 KB). We thank everyone who participated in the survey.
