Crankies Plain Bridge over the Coolumbooka River

Reviewed

Project overview

We are developing a program of work to preserve the historically significant Crankies Plain Bridge, one of only four McDonald timber truss bridges to be retained across NSW. This important work will ensure the bridge remains operational, while also preserving a local icon for many years to come.

We are carrying out early investigations  to guide future planning for the historically significant Crankies Plain Bridge over the Coolumbooka River.

Project information

Background

Crankies Plain Bridge crosses the Coolumbooka River north-east of Bombala. It is a significant local heritage infrastructure piece dating back to the early 1890s and is one of only four McDonald timber truss road bridges remaining in NSW.

The bridge supports the connection of arterial roads, including Cathcart Road, Crankies Plain Road, Pipe Clay Springs Road and Black Lake Road, to the Monaro Highway. It also connects the community and residents of Coolumbooka and Cathcart to Bombala, Bibbenluke and surrounds.

Through regular inspections, we have identified the need for essential maintenance work on the aging Crankies Plain Bridge. While the crossing is safe and operational, we are working with Heritage NSW to develop a program of work that will meet heritage requirements and maintain access for the community.
