Project information
Background
The NSW Government is funding this project as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Point Program, which aims to reduce congestion and improve travel time on Sydney’s busiest corridors.
An average of 60,000 motorists each day use the Cumberland Highway, which links the M4 and Liverpool. Motorists faced long wait times and heavy congestion at the Cumberland Highway and Merrylands Road intersection at Greystanes, because of the limited number of dedicated turning lanes.
Motorists would experience congestion travelling to places in the local area including shops, Merrylands train station, school, work or their homes, especially during AM and PM peak times.
To help address the problem Roads and Maritime began upgrading the intersection at Cumberland Highway and Merrylands Road in 2018. This project is now complete. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we carried out this important work.
Since opening to traffic in May 2019, this upgrade has eased congestion and is delivering more reliable trips for all road users.
Benefits
The upgrade is helping to:
- ease congestion along Cumberland Highway and Merrylands Road by allowing more motorists to continue straight without turning traffic blocking them
- improve traffic flow in all directions by allowing more motorists to turn at the intersection using dedicated turning lanes
- reduce travel times for northbound road users
- create more reliable trips for residents travelling to work, school and Merrylands train station.
