July 2025 – New detour announced

Following valuable feedback from the community and stakeholders, it has been made clear that Dudgeons Lane is not suitable as a detour route for the upcoming works.

In response to this feedback, we have identified an alternative route.

Primary Detour Route

A 21.8-kilometre detour via Friday Hut Road, Coolamon Scenic Drive, and Lismore Road, is available with an extended journey time of up to 23 minutes.

A map of the new proposed detour is featured on this page.

Background

About the bridge

The bridge at Friday Hut Road, Binna Burra is approximately a three-span timber structure located along the non-operational N62 Casino to Murwillumbah railway line.

It is part of the Country Regional Network (CRN), managed by network operator, UGL Regional Linx (UGLRL).

This bridge is operational and used by both vehicles and pedestrians.

About the work

UGLRL, on behalf of Transport for NSW (Transport), is upgrading the Friday Hut Road rail bridge in Binna Burra to improve the structure’s integrity, performance and ensure ongoing safe use.

As a part of the upgrade, UGLRL will replace the current timber bridge with a steel arch bridge and widen the bridge to allow for safer traffic use.

The proposed work will take approximately eight months to complete and is expected to take place from August 2025 to April 2026.

The proposed work involves:

  • demolition of the existing structure
  • construction of a multi-plate arch bridge beneath the current road alignment, involving approximately one
  • metre of excavation
  • upgrading the bridge to current engineering and road standards
  • relocation of services as necessary.

While this important work takes place, a detour will be in place. See map on this page.

Project benefits

This important upgrade will:

  • ease traffic congestion, reduce travel times and increase bridge use capacity
  • improve quality and safety of the bridge to meet current engineering and road standards.

What’s happening

Before any work commences, UGLRL would like to understand how the proposed work might impact users and residents.

To continue to build their knowledge of the bridge and understand its use by the community, UGLRL will consult with the community and stakeholders from 23 June to 20 July 2025.

To find out more about the consultation and how you can take part, scroll down to Community Consultation on this page.

Next steps

Following consultation, the next steps for the project are:

  • assess all feedback
  • develop a consultation summary report
  • inform the community of the outcome.

The proposed 23-minute detour is available via Friday Hut Road, Coolamon Scenic Drive, and Lismore Road. The detour is being reviewed based on feedback from the community and Byron Shire Council.
