Great Western Highway and Blacktown Road

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government has committed over $825 million to pinch point projects which ease congestion, reduce traffic delays and improve travel times on Sydney's major roads.

Project information

Background

The NSW Government completed this intersection upgrade as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Point Program, which reduces congestion and improves travel times on Sydney’s busiest corridors.

Before December 2018, road users and local residents in Prospect and southern Blacktown experienced heavy congestion when traveling along the Great Western Highway and connecting to the M4. Few turn lanes caused long wait times while waiting to turn onto the Great Western Highway from Blacktown Road and unprotected turns at traffic lights caused accidents creating even more congestion at this busy ‘pinch point’.

Roads and Maritime Services started working on the intersection of Great Western Highway and Blacktown Road in June 2018. It has now been completed.

Since opening to traffic, this upgrade is delivering more reliable trips for all road users. For more information, view our May 2019 notification (PDF, 290Kb).

Benefits

The project is helping to:

  • ease congestion along the Great Western Highway
  • reduce travel times during journeys
  • create more reliable trips for Prospect and other local suburb residents wanting to connect to the M4.

What is a 'pinch point'?

Pinch points are traffic congestion points, intersections or short lengths of road at which a traffic bottleneck exists slowing down the broader network. They cause a build up of traffic and travel delays at these spots and on the wider road network.

What did we do?

The completed work includes:

  • providing an additional right turn lane, so that there are two dedicated right turn lanes, from the Great Western Highway westbound onto Blacktown Road
  • providing a dedicated right turn lane and one shared through and right turn lane from Blacktown Road onto the Great Western Highway increasing safety for road users passing through the intersection
  • converting the bus lanes on the Great Western Highway onto Blacktown Road to general traffic lanes allowing more locals to drive towards Blacktown without blocking motorists passing through Prospect
  • creating a dedicated left turn slip lane from the converted bus lane on Blacktown Road onto the Great Western Highway improving traffic flow benefitting City bound road users
  • relocating the bus stops on Blacktown Road further away from the intersection, reducing the impact stopping buses will have on traffic flow.

Community information

Community consultation

Roads and Maritime invited comment on the proposed improvements in October 2017. We prepared a community consultation report (PDF, 944Kb) that summarises the feedback we received and our responses. After considering all responses, we decided to proceed with the proposed intersection improvements at Great Western Highway and Blacktown Road, Prospect.
