Heathcote Road essential slope remediation

Transport for NSW is carrying out road realignment work on Heathcote Road in Engadine to provide a safe and efficient journey for road users.

Background

The heavy rainfall events of 2022 resulted in two landslips along Heathcote Road, with the first occurring in April 2022 and the other in July 2022.

Although emergency repairs were completed in 2022, the area continues to experience movement and remains a safety risk.

The remediation of Heathcote Road will move 280 metres of the existing road to stabilise the road against future collapses.

Work is expected to be completed by early September 2025, weather and site conditions permitting.

What work are we doing?

The first stage of work involves clearing of vegetation and trees to allow access to the uphill rock face. 

The next stage of work will involve cutting into and stabilising the rock face, where the new road alignment will be constructed, and drainage will be upgraded.

Heathcote Road closures

Heathcote Road will be closed at various times between New Illawarra Road and Princes Highway for the safety of motorists and workers while work is underway.

Closures scheduled to early September will include: 

  • each night Monday to Thursday from 8pm to 5am, weather permitting.
  • weekends from 8pm Friday to 5am Monday, weather permitting.

Weekend access

Throughout August there may be opportunities to open Heathcote Road on weekends between 8am Saturday and 8pm Sunday, weather permitting, to help support smoother traffic flow and community travel.

Transport will provide weekly updates through: 

  • The Live Traffic NSW App, livetraffic.com or by calling 132 701
  • Transport for NSW Facebook page
  • Electronic message signs near the closure points.

We encourage residents and road users to check these channels each week for the latest closure information.

Detour during closures

A detour will be in place via New Illawarra Road, Bangor Bypass and Princes Highway during all closures of Heathcote Road. Please see the detour map below.

Access to Forum Drive will be maintained during the road closures.

Access for National Parks and Wildlife Services and emergency services will be maintained during the road closures.

Detour Map

The slope is located on Heathcote Road, between Princes Highway and New Illawarra Road, around 2km north-west of Princess Highway.
