Hunter Orana fuel pipeline

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW is undertaking preliminary work to identify route options for a fuel pipeline corridor that would connect the Port of Newcastle fuel import terminals to a Central Western NSW location via the Hunter.

The project aims to provide a cost-effective, safe and reliable fuel supply alternative to road transport for important agricultural and mining industries, and regional commuters.

Key benefits

  • We have commissioned research to determine the most effective and sustainable approach in delivering the pipeline, while minimising the impact of construction on the community and the environment.

Transport for NSW is undertaking preliminary work to identify route options for a fuel pipeline corridor that would extend from the Port of Newcastle to a location in the Central Western or Orana region of NSW via the Hunter.

We have commissioned research to determine the most effective and sustainable approach in delivering the pipeline, while minimising the impact of construction on the community and the environment. One idea being considered is the use of bicycle lanes to prevent development over pipeline corridors.

Community consultation will be undertaken when more details are known.

Regional NSW consumes about 40 per cent of the transport fuel used in NSW with large volumes required for the vehicles and machinery operating in mining and agricultural industries.

The Central West is an important juncture on the National Land Transport Network and provides North-South and East-West, interstate heavy road and rail connectivity.

The Hunter region contains a high concentration of mining activity which has long been the backbone of the NSW economy and base-load power generation.

Currently all fuel is transported to the region by road from terminals as far as Port Botany. This increases fuel costs and safety risks for other road users and contributes to congestion.

A fuel pipeline can address these issues and ensure a cost-effective, safe and reliable supply to support these important NSW industries and regional customers.
