Latest news

March 2025 – Inspection works completed

A structural assessment of Manilla Viaduct was completed in November 2024.

The project team is now reviewing the findings to determine if any additional safety measures are needed. Transport will keep the community informed about any required works.

November 2024 – Upcoming inspection works

From Monday, 25 November 2024 to Friday, 29 November 2024, Transport for NSW (Transport) will undertake an updated condition assessment of the Manilla Viaduct.

The upcoming works will include visual inspection using an elevated work platform (EWP) and bore testing of timber elements. This work will take place across the full length of the viaduct from Namoi Street to Bowman Street.

Following the inspection results, our next steps will be to implement any further make safe works (if any) that are identified. Transport will inform the community of any additional works required.

July 2024 - Update on safety works

Safety works at Manilla Viaduct have been completed. Originally intended as temporary measures, the works will now remain in situ until they can be replaced by more permanent make safe solutions. You can read our July community notification (PDF, 373.75 KB) for more detail.

Project information

Background

The non-operational Manilla Viaduct (Asset) is a state heritage listed steel Pratt truss bridge with timber girders located over the Namoi River in Manilla, NSW.

Following an inspection of the asset, Transport for NSW (Transport) found that immediate intervention was required to maintain public safety. In making this decision, Transport considered safety of the public and the environment in the short term whilst balancing the need to conserve the heritage significance of the structure.

In March 2024, Transport undertook additional safety works to the Manilla Viaduct within the showground and at River Street prior to the Manilla Show (8-10 March 2024) to ensure safe public access to the showground. To find out more about the works, please see the latest Community Notification found in ‘Community Information’ on this page.

What's happening

While works carried out in March 2024 were intended as temporary measures, the interim safety measures will now remain in situ until they can be replaced by more permanent make-safe solutions. Further testing and assessments are required to determine the next steps in the medium term to ensure that the structure of the viaduct remains safe.

Next steps

We’re currently reviewing our recent tests and assessments to determine the next steps in the medium-term to ensure that the structure of the viaduct remains safe.

The long-term future management of Manilla Viaduct will be determined through the Regional Rail Heritage Strategy (RRHS) which is currently being developed by Transport. The draft RRHS will be placed on public display to obtain community and stakeholder feedback on the proposed strategy.

Transport will continue to keep the community informed of project progress.
