Mudies Creek

Project overview

The Australian and New South Wales Governments are jointly investing $133 million in a vital infrastructure upgrade to construct a new road crossing over Mudies Creek at Whittingham, south of Singleton.

The Mudies Creek project will deliver a 28-metre-long bridge designed to withstand a one-in-100-year flood event. This new structure will be built five metres higher than the existing road level, significantly improving travel reliability and safety along the Golden Highway during severe weather and flooding.

Project background

The Golden Highway is a 313-kilometre-long rural highway, mostly with single lanes, connecting the New England Highway at Belford in the Hunter Valley to the Newell Highway at Dubbo via Denman, Merriwa and Dunedoo.

The upgrade at Mudies Creek is part of a package of work being delivered on the Golden Highway, between Whittingham and Dubbo, to improve safety, traffic efficiency, network reliability and freight access.

Major work as part of the Golden Highway package includes intersection improvements, road rebuilding, shoulder widening, overtaking lanes, rest area improvements and flood immunity projects.

The NSW Government is providing $109 million funding, with an additional $24 million funding from the Australian Government, for the work at Mudies Creek.

June work update – traffic changes on Golden Highway, Whittingham

As part of upgrade work to improve flood immunity on the Golden Highway, major construction activity will start at Mudies Creek, Whittingham, with the construction of a new 28-metre long bridge designed to withstand a one in 100 year flood event.

The new structure will be built five metres higher than the existing road level, improving road resilience during flood events.

To carry out this work safely and efficiently, the Golden Highway will be closed between the New England Highway and Range Road from 7pm on Friday 27 June until 4am on Monday 30 June 2025, and again the following weekend from 7pm Friday 4 July to 4am Monday 7 July 2025, weather permitting.

Light vehicle traffic will be detoured via Range Road, with delays of up to 10 minutes expected.

Access on the Golden Highway will be maintained for local residents and heavy vehicles.

Heavy vehicles are to remain on the Golden Highway and will be accommodated through the worksite under traffic control.

Traffic control will be in place to assist pedestrians and cyclists through the work zone.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be positioned on the Golden Highway west of Range Road and on the New England Highway east of the Belford interchange to advise motorists of changed conditions. Motorists are advised to follow the direction of traffic controllers and signage.
