Project information
Background
The Tycannah Rest Area is located between Narrabri and Moree on the Newell Highway, approximately 17 kilometres south of Moree.
The Newell Highway is a key regional route, linking the north and south of NSW, and the safety of road user is a key priority. To improve road safety, Transport for NSW is working with the road freight industry to improve the quantity and quality of heavy vehicle rest stops across the state.
Driver fatigue is a significant contributor to road crashes and presents a safety risk to all road users.
Access to rest areas and available facilities are essential in supporting road users with planning their trips and rest breaks to avoid driver fatigue.
The upgrade of the Tycannah Rest Area will provide more access for heavy vehicles and ensure a safer more convenient journey for all road users.
Benefits
- Support heavy vehicle driver safety and wellbeing, and compliance with mandatory rest breaks for fatigue management
- Improved access for heavy vehicles through longer deceleration and acceleration lanes
- Improved road safety for all road users
- Increased parking capacity for heavy vehicles
- Better separation of light vehicles and caravans
- More opportunities for drivers to rest and access toilet facilities
- Enhanced comfort and convenience for road users
- Reduced maintenance costs.
Features
Key features of the upgrade include:
- extension of northbound rest area to the south along the highway by 150 metres to provide more parking
- parking for up to 30 heavy vehicles – 14 southbound rest area and 16 at the northbound rest area
- installation of flushable toilets, rubbish bins and shade
- relocation of light vehicle parking in the northbound rest area to provide improved separation between light vehicles and heavy vehicles
- inclusion of separate caravan parking on northbound and southbound rest area. There is also a specific shoulder designated for caravans near the toilet block.
Next steps
Work will commence on Monday 27 October 2025 and will take approximately six months to complete, weather permitting.
