Newtown speed zone

Our work needs to be carried out at night to minimise traffic disruption and reduce safety risks to workers and motorists. We plan to work for up to five nights per week whilst we carry out the work, weather and work site, conditions permitting.

There will be temporary lane closures and traffic lights at intersections may be switched off during our work hours to ensure the work area is safe for road users and workers. When signals are out traffic controllers will be in place to direct traffic.

There may also be partial closure of footpath in the work area and alternative path will be provided. Please keep to speed limits and follow signs and traffic controllers' directions.

Transport Network and Safety Services has undertaken a comprehensive review of the speed limit in accordance with the NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines.

The speed zone recommendation is based on crash history, traffic characteristics and roadside environment. Itis expected to bring road safety benefits to all road users in this area.

There were a total of 221 recorded crashes from 1 June 2015 to 30 June 2020 in Sydney's inner west - 59 resulted in serious injury, 48 involved pedestrians and 15 where speeding was a contributing factor.

The benefits include:

• improved road safety
• improved pedestrian safety
• safe access and enjoyment of the urban village atmosphere of the local restaurants, cafes and the many shopping experiences
• reduced crash incidents.

This work includes the existing 60 km/h speed limit along the Princes Highway (Route 1) near St Peter Station, 50 km/h speed limit along King Street (Princes Highway, Route 1), Enmore Road (Route 167), Wilson Street, and Erskineville Road, Swanson Street and Copeland Street (Route 193) in Sydney be reduced to a new 40 km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area.
