Project information
Background
About the bridge
The overbridge (bridge) at Old Bangalow Road, Byron Bay is approximately a three-span timber structure located along the non-operational N62 Casino to Murwillumbah railway line.
It is part of the Country Regional Network (CRN), managed by network operator, UGL Regional Linx (UGLRL).
The existing structure has a 5-tonne load limit, limiting the use of this bridge for heavy vehicles.
This bridge is operational and used by both vehicles and pedestrians.
About the work
UGLRL, on behalf of Transport for NSW (Transport), is upgrading the Old Bangalow Road rail bridge in Byron Bay to improve the structure’s integrity, performance and ensure ongoing safe use.
As a part of the upgrade, UGLRL will replace the current timber bridge with a steel arch bridge and widen the bridge to allow for two-lane traffic.
The work involves:
- demolition of the existing structure
- construction of a multi-plate arch bridge beneath the current road alignment, involving approximately one metre of excavation
- erection of a retaining wall next to the steel arch bridge
- upgrading the bridge to current engineering and road standards
- relocation of services as necessary.
While this work takes place, a detour will be in place. The 5-minute detour is available via Old Bangalow Road, Bangalow Road, and Broken Head Road.
Project benefits
This important upgrade will:
- ease traffic congestion, reduce travel times and increase bridge use capacity
- increase load limit to 42.5 tonne
- improve quality and safety of the bridge to meet current engineering and road standards.
What’s happening
UGLRL carried out consultation with the community on the bridge renewal project to determine how the bridge is used and potential impacts of the project.
Consultation was open from 2 May to 31 May 2025 and is now complete. A Consultation Outcomes Report (PDF, 535.51 KB) is available to read. Please scroll down to the ‘Reports’ section of this webpage to access the report.
We are currently in the construction phase of the project, with work to commence from 18 August 2025 to mid-February 2026, between 7am and 5pm, including some weekend work.
UGLRL will take all necessary steps to minimise community and environmental impacts.
For more information about the work, please scroll down to the community notifications section on this webpage.
Next steps
Mobilisation to site will commence on 18 August 2025. UGLRL will keep the community updated as the works progress.
Please note, the bridge will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians during the work, however a detour will be in place. The 5 minute detour is available via Old Bangalow Road, Bangalow Road, and Broken Head Road. See map below.
