Transport for NSW is planning safety improvements on Old South Head Road near Strickland Street and Hamilton Street in Rose Bay as part of the Road Safety Program.
The Road Safety Program, launched in early 2024, aims to reduce crashes and save lives on NSW roads. The Australian and NSW governments are investing $518 million to deliver road safety projects across the state.

About the project
Transport for NSW is improving safety on Old South Head Road near Strickland and Hamilton streets in Rose Bay.
We’re in the early design stages and are investigating plans to replace the existing zebra crossing with a raised ‘wombat’ crossing to slow vehicles and improve safety for people walking, riding and driving.

Site investigations
In November 2025, we’ll be conducting site investigations to inform the design. These investigations will help us understand the feasibility of safety improvements to the pedestrian crossing on Old South Head Road near Strickland and Hamilton streets.
This work will be completed at night and includes:
- locating underground utilities
- geotechnical investigations
- topographical surveys.
Next steps
We aim to implement these improvements by mid-2026.
We’ll continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.
