Project information

Background

Five safety upgrades planned for the Mitchell Highway between Orange and Wellington will deliver smoother, safer journeys for all road users travelling on this key route in the state’s central west.

The Orange to Wellington Safety Upgrades are being funded through the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program, a road safety infrastructure and speed management treatment program that aims to deliver sustainable and long-term reductions in road trauma through upgrades of the existing road network.

Safety treatments including shoulder widening, wide centrelines, safety barriers and audio tactile line marking (rumble strips) will help to ensure that the thousands of locals, tourists and freight operators who travel between Orange and Wellington every day make it to their destinations safely.

Benefits

The key objectives of the Towards Zero Safer Road Program are to:

  • help reduce fatalities to less than 164 per year (-50%), and serious injuries to less than 7,796 per year (-30%) by 2030
  • provide greater protection for all road users, including vulnerable users, through road safety upgrades.

Next steps

The Orange to Wellington Safety Upgrades projects at Apsley and Cundumbul are complete.

Our crews are currently working at Larras Lee, which is expected to be completed by late 2025.

Following the completion of the Larras Lee project, our teams will commence work at Neurea, south of Apsley.

We will continue to update the community as work on the project progresses.
