Picton bypass

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is planning a proposed future bypass of Picton town centre. The proposed new arterial road will provide motorists and heavy vehicles an alternate route linking Thirlmere and Tahmoor with the Hume Motorway via Picton Road.

This is one of a number of Transport projects that are supporting greater connections across outer south-west Sydney. We are taking steps to support communities and growth in this area by reducing congestion and increasing safety on our roads, along with introducing new sustainable transport options for better access to employment, services and leisure destinations.

We are also planning for the future needs of the region – see more

Project information

Background

In 2018, $3 million was provided to Transport to investigate Picton Bypass options and produce a Strategic Business Case.

Between December 2020 and February 2021, Transport invited feedback from the community on a proposed corridor for a bypass of Picton.

The proposed corridor would deliver a new two-lane, two-way connection between Remembrance Driveway, south of Wonga Road and Picton Road, and northwest of Maldon Bridge Road.

Transport has summarised all the feedback in a Consultation Report (PDF) and background information on the different corridor options assessed is available through the Strategic Corridor Options Report (PDF).

Benefits

  • Reducing traffic congestion in Picton and improving amenity for the local community
  • Delivering an alternative and more direct route between Remembrance Driveway and the Hume Motorway, via Picton Road.
  • Improving safety and increasing journey reliability for road users.
  • Providing resilience during emergency events such as bushfire and flood.

Next steps

We will continue to keep the community updated as we progress the Picton Bypass Project.
