Picton Road between Almond Street, Wilton and M1 Princes Motorway interchange - Picton Road upgrade
Project overview
Transport for NSW is planning to upgrade Picton Road between the Nepean River and the M1 Princes Motorway, including the interchanges at the M31 Hume Motorway and the M1 Princes Motorway. The upgrade has been divided into three sections - western, central and eastern.
The central section begins at Almond Street, Wilton to around Mount Keira Road, and the eastern section runs from around Mount Keira Road to the M1 Princes Motorway interchange.

April 2025 – central and eastern section contract award
Following a competitive tender process, a contract has been awarded to AECOM Australia and Stantec Australia joint venture to carry out field investigations, constraints definition and development of design options for Picton Road between Almond Street, Wilton and the M1 Princes Motorway.
Over the coming months, the community can expect to see an increase in team members on the ground in the local area carrying out investigations to fully understand all the factors that may influence the design of a future upgrade.
Investigations will help to identify key considerations and constraints in relation to biodiversity, heritage, geology, soils, water quality, land use, traffic and transport and utilities to inform early work on project design options.
The central and eastern sections are currently at the early planning and options development phase. Transport will keep the community updated as the project progresses.

Frequently Asked Questions
What stage is the central and eastern sections of the upgrade up to?
The central and eastern sections are currently at the early planning and options development phase.
Transport for NSW (Transport) has recently awarded a contract for further site investigations, constraints definition and development of design options for Picton Road between Almond Street, Wilton and the M1 Princes Motorway. The contract was awarded to AECOM Australia and Stantec Australia Joint Venture (also known as the Picton Pathways Joint Venture).
Why was the project divided into sections?
We have divided the upgrade into three project sections to ensure we can focus on the areas you told us to prioritise while allowing us to continue concurrent planning for all sections.
What are the known complexities for the central and eastern sections?
There are a number of known constructability and environmental constraints associated with upgrading and increasing the capacity of Picton Road in these sections. The project area:
- forms part of the Sydney drinking water catchment
- has varying topography including ridges and deep gullies
- is known to be home to threatened flora and fauna species
- has high cultural value and contains many Aboriginal heritage sites.
The site investigations will ensure these constraints are well understood. This will allow carefully considered design options to be developed that deliver the best outcome for improving safety and reliability, and increasing capacity of Picton Road, while minimising impacts to the community and environment as much as possible.
What are the next steps on the central and eastern sections?
Transport is working closely with the Picton Pathways Joint Venture team to carry out early field investigations that will inform a range of project design options.
Transport will keep the community informed of the project as planning progresses.
