Background
The Bay Street retail and entertainment precinct attracts many people accessing the shops, restaurants and Brighton-Le-Sands beach. There is significant interaction between vehicles travelling into and through Brighton-Le-Sands on Bay Street and people walking through this precinct.
This project will improve the safety of pedestrians and reduce the likelihood of anti-social driving behaviour occurring on Bay Street.
Previous Community Consultation
Transport undertook community consultation in 2022 for The Grand Parade Place and Access Improvements proposal, which included these measures. Broad community support was received for the traffic calming proposal on Bay Street.
Key features
To improve pedestrian and customer safety we have installed:
- a raised threshold (speed hump) on the approaches to the existing mid-block signalised crossing
- an extended central median along Bay Street between the mid-block signalised crossing and Moate Avenue to stop vehicle turning movements
- a kerb build out on the northern side of Bay Street to shorten the pedestrian crossing distance at the existing mid-block signalised crossing.
Benefits
- the project aims to improve pedestrian safety and slow down vehicles, creating a safer environment for pedestrians and road users
- reduce unsafe driving behaviour and hooning on Bay Street, Brighton-Le-Sands.
