Transport for NSW is carrying out medium-term safety improvements at the Snowy Mountains Highway and Batlow Road intersection to address immediate safety issues and improve the intersection. These improvements were based on feedback received during community consultation during 2020.
Work includes speed zone changes, upgrading line marking and signage, removing vegetation, and installing rumble strips and electronic vehicle- activated warning signage.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm weekdays and 8am to 1pm Saturdays from Monday 8 March. Work is expected to be completed in one week, weather permitting.
Transport for NSW will monitor safety at this intersection over the coming years and, if required, engage further with local residents and stakeholders to develop subsequent projects as required for the Batlow Road intersection with Snowy Mountains Highway.
Project information
Background
The Snowy Mountains Highway is an important freight and tourism link, connecting regional NSW with the South Coast, and the local timber industry with the Hume Highway and ports of Sydney and Melbourne.
Batlow Road connects the towns of Batlow, Laurel Hill and Tumbarumba with the Snowy Mountains Highway and the regional centre of Tumut.
Snowy Mountains Highway and Batlow Road provide:
- access for timber and agricultural distribution
- connectivity to regional centres
- a public transport route for school buses
- a tourist and commuter route linking the Hume Highway, Tumut, National Parks and the Snowy Mountains to the east
Batlow Road meets the Snowy Mountains Highway at a T-intersection, five kilometres west of Tumut.
From July 2015 to June 2020, there were three reported crashes at the intersection, including one fatal crash and two moderate injury crashes.
Transport for NSW understands there may have been more minor collisions or near-misses in this time that went unreported.
What happens next?
Safety upgrades at the Batlow Road intersection will be carried out from 8 March and is expected to take one week to complete, weather permitting.
We will continue to keep the community informed as upgrade work is carried out.
