Tenterfield heavy vehicle bypass

Reviewed

Project overview

The Australian Government is providing $10 million to continue planning of the bypass.

The project includes about 4.5 kilometres of new road that starts just north of Tenterfield Creek Bridge on the southern edge of town, runs west of the railway corridor and rejoins the existing New England Highway near Cowper Street, north of Tenterfield.

Background

The preferred route (orange corridor) for the Tenterfield heavy vehicle bypass was announced in March 2015. You can view the consultation summary report.

The road alignment has been included in the Tenterfield Shire Council's Local Environmental Plan so that the land can be reserved for future road construction and provide planning certainty for the community.

Tenterfield is located on the Great Dividing Range at the northern end of the New England Tableland and at the intersection of the New England and Bruxner highways.

The existing highway passes through Tenterfield's central business district, causing traffic and safety issues from the mix of heavy vehicle and through traffic with local trips and pedestrian activity.

Transport for NSW has worked with the community to identify a preferred route for a heavy vehicle bypass of Tenterfield. Investigations included extensive community consultation with local residents, council, and key stakeholders.

The preferred route provides the best overall balance in meeting the following project objectives:

  • Improve road safety
  • Improve road transport productivity, efficiency and reliability of travel
  • Minimise the impact on the natural, cultural and built environment
  • Provide sustainable economic outcomes for the local community
  • Minimise social impact on the local community
  • Provide value for money.

Although construction funding has not been allocated, the preferred route for a future heavy vehicle bypass provides certainty for the future development of Tenterfield.

Planning work commenced

Arcadis Australia Pacific Pty Ltd has recently been engaged to carry out planning work which will involve carrying out a review of environmental factors, as well as the concept and detailed design for the project.

This work forms part of the $10 million committed by the Australian Government in July 2017, to continue planning for this project to have it ready for construction once funding becomes available.

Timing for building the bypass will depend on funding availability. Funding for construction has not been committed at this stage.
