Trial traffic changes at Victoria Road and Bowden Street intersection, Ryde

Project information

Roads and Maritime upgraded the intersection of Victoria Road and Bowden Street last year, improving traffic flow, reducing travel times and making travel safer.

Since upgrading the intersection, we have received feedback from the community about the challenges of turning right from the southern side of Bowden Street onto Victoria Road eastbound. We have established this trial to address this feedback.

This is a six month trial. At the end of the trial, we will review the information collected and consult with the community, before deciding whether to keep this arrangement permanently.

If you have any feedback on the trial change or any general questions, please contact our delivery partner, LT Joint Venture, on 1800 735 563 or info@ltjv.com.au.

Motorists needing to turn right from the northern side of Bowden Street onto Victoria Road have a number of different options, including turning right onto Victoria Road at:

  • Hermitage Road in West Ryde
  • West Parade in West Ryde
  • Devlin Street in Ryde.

Road users can also travel through the Victoria Road and Bowden Street intersection and use nearby streets such as Forsyth Street and Mellor Street in West Ryde or Shepherd Street in Ryde to turn left onto Victoria Road.

Roads and Maritime recently upgraded the intersection of Victoria Road and Bowden Street, improving traffic flow, reducing travel times and making travel safer.

Since upgrading the intersection, we have received feedback from the community about the challenges of turning right from the southern side of Bowden Street onto Victoria Road eastbound.

We have listened to this community feedback and will trial installing a right turn arrow at the intersection to assist this turn. The availability of the right turn arrow will improve safety and traffic flow for these road users.

During the trial, to further ensure the safety of all road users, right turns from Bowden Street into Victoria Road westbound will be banned. Road users needing to turn right onto Victoria Road should use Hermitage Road in West Ryde (600 metres away) instead.

This is a six month trial. At the end of the trial, we will review the information collected and consult with the community, before deciding whether to keep this arrangement permanently.

Work to update the traffic lights will begin from Sunday 6 January 2019. The trial will begin in early February and we will notify the community again before the traffic changes begin.

The NSW Government funded this project as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Point Program, which aimed to reduce delays, manage congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s major roads.

Roads and Maritime Services made improvements to the intersection of Victoria Road and Bowden Street to help improve traffic flow, travel times and safety for all road users, particularly during peak periods.

Our upgrades included:

  • extending the eastbound right turn lane on Victoria Road southbound from 30 metres to 45 metres
  • replacing Victoria Road turning lane median and road marking
  • removing left turn traffic lights filter from Bowden Street northbound
  • removing two signs that read “Left turn on red permitted after stopping”
  • modifying existing pedestrian crossings on the northern and southern side of Bowden Street
  • relocating the pedestrian crossing on Victoria Road from the eastern side of the intersection to the western side
  • undertaking pavement marking, kerb, pram ramps and footpath works to support the new pedestrian crossing.

Key benefits to the community include:

  • preventing vehicles from spilling out of the right turn lane and blocking one of the through lanes, leaving one effective through lane on Victoria Road eastbound
  • eliminating the loss of green light time for right turning traffic along Bowden Street northbound when waiting for pedestrians crossing the intersection.
