Project overview
Transport for NSW has completed an extension of the M1 Princes Motorway between Yallah and Oak Flats to bypass Albion Park Rail. The Albion Park Rail bypass is a $630 million project funded by the NSW Government that completes the 'missing link' for a high standard road between Sydney and Bomaderry. It is an important freight, bus and tourist route. The bypass was opened in October 2021, and work was completed early 2022.
Opening of the southbound lanes
Locals, freight and travellers are now driving on the southbound lanes of the Albion Park Rail bypass, which have opened 12 months ahead of schedule. Road users will now bypass 16 intersections, delivering a time saving of up to 30% and returning local streets to local communities, with 65% of through traffic now expected to use the bypass instead.
Neville’s story
Neville has seen plenty of floods in the area that have blocked the roads, restricted access and put residents’ safety at risk. The new bypass will improve reliability of access and reduce the need for road closures as a result of flooding. Access will be maintained along the motorway during a one in 100 year flood event.
Deborah’s Story
Deborah is the owner and proprietor of Ravensthorpe, an events and wedding venue located in Albion Park, close to the construction of the bypass. Transport for NSW works closely with our communities to minimise the impact to business and residents.
The Infrastructure Skills Legacy Program (ISLP)
The Albion Park Rail bypass Infrastructure Skills Legacy Program (ISLP) provided training and employment opportunities and supported local jobs in the region. The Training Hub hosted a variety of programs to build the future skill base of the South Coast and NSW construction workforce and address skill gaps through over 15 National Accredited Training Courses, other short courses and tickets. With the Albion Park Rail bypass project on track for completion in late 2021 and the ISLP coming to a close, the Training Hub will be relocated. The Albion Park Rail bypass team won the 2020 NSW Training Awards Industry Collaboration Award.
Opening of the northbound lanes
The northbound lanes now open! The northbound lanes of the Albion Park Rail bypass are now open to traffic allowing road users to start benefiting from the new motorway.
Community Event
The Albion Park Rail bypass community event took place on Saturday 19 June. It was an opportunity for the community to celebrate the final stages of this highly anticipated project and take a walk on a section of the new bypass before it opens to traffic. It was also a chance for Transport for NSW to thank the community for their patience throughout the construction. Community members, young and old, arrived to celebrate this important milestone.
New traffic lights at Oak Flats interchange
New traffic lights were installed at the Oak Flats interchange between 5 and 7 June 2021.
Oak Flats interchange temporary weekend closure
The Oak Flats interchange will be closed from 6pm Saturday 5 June until 5am Monday 7 June 2021 (weather permitting). During this work, detours will be in place.
Access changes for Albion Park
In the coming weeks, the motorway between Yallah and Albion Park will open in a temporary arrangement only providing access to and from Albion Park.
How these changes will affect motorists

Project initiatives
ISLP Program - supporting refugee communities
The Infrastructure Skills Legacy Program (ISLP) is a statewide NSW Government initiative that aims to boost the number of skilled construction workers and create fresh pathways to employment across the state.
ISLP on the Albion Park Rail bypass project provides training and employment opportunities for people in the local community who are interested in a career in construction.
It focuses on supporting key community groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, refugee and long term unemployed, women in non-traditional roles, young people and learning workers.
