Project overview

We are carrying out the Wagga Wagga Northern Access Strategy to help guide future planning priorities and investment opportunities to create a transport network which operates as safely and efficiently as possible along the city’s Sturt Highway and Olympic Highway corridors.

May 2025 – Consultation report released

Community consultation to help inform the Wagga Wagga Northern Access Strategy report was carried out in October 2024.

We asked for the community’s feedback on the connectivity and efficiency of the transport network in Wagga Wagga. The strategy will concentrate on the transport network connecting Wagga Wagga, with a focus on the Sturt and Olympic highways including major intersections on both corridors.

We have carefully considered all feedback and a community consultation report (PDF, 5.76 MB) has been prepared, summarising matters raised.

Community feedback will help inform the planning of future improvements to the Wagga Wagga road network. We will keep you updated as planning progresses.

The strategy also includes areas of predicted residential and industrial growth to the north of Wagga Wagga.

This focus includes road safety and network efficiency, active transport connectivity, on-street parking, congestion and delays in peak periods, public transport availability, environment, property access, freight movement and the future transport needs of road users and the community.

It will also consider network vulnerability and potential impacts during natural disasters and working with other State government agencies and local councils, so Transport for NSW can enhance its preparedness into the future.

Project background - About the strategy

We are investigating improvements to the transport network in Wagga Wagga with a focus on the Olympic and Sturt highways, and areas of industrial and residential growth in the north of Wagga Wagga.

The Wagga Wagga Northern Access Strategy will inform planning for a more efficient future transport network which meets the needs of road users and the community. This forms part of our long-term commitment to provide safe, efficient and reliable journeys through Wagga Wagga.   The strategy will focus on key areas such as road safety, connectivity and network links, congestion points and queuing, active travel (pedestrian and cycling access), public transport, parking, freight movement, property access and environment.

It aims to evaluate infrastructure and service planning from now and into the future. It will also identify a range of actions which Transport, Wagga Wagga City Council and other key stakeholders can consider to efficiently manage and plan the city’s transport network. This new strategy will build on work already done and use more detailed data collection and modelling to investigate concepts and initiatives identified in the earlier studies.

Key objectives

A key objective of the project is to develop an overall strategy to manage the transport network along the Sturt Highway and Olympic Highway corridors, including major intersections, with a focus on predicted industrial and residential growth areas to the north of Wagga Wagga.
Other objectives include:

  • understanding the extent and impact on the community associated with the increased capacity demands for traffic travelling to Wagga Wagga’s northern suburbs
  • identifying initiatives which will improve access between the Northern Growth Area and services in Wagga Wagga
  • identifying initiatives to reduce commuter delays while planning for future highway traffic, including freight, on the Olympic and Sturt highways
  • carrying out further modelling aligning with the initiatives of the Wagga Wagga Transport Plan (2021)
  • providing clarity on when preferred solutions will need to be delivered.

Community benefits

The Wagga Wagga Northern Access Strategy aims to benefit the community by:

  • supporting economic growth and future transport needs in and around Wagga Wagga
  •   improving safety
  • reviewing network resilience
  • delivering a high performing, well integrated and efficient transport network
  • improving accessibility to transport infrastructure and services for all community members
  • providing a more reliable journey and better-connected transport services through Wagga Wagga.

Community engagement

Consultation for this project was carried out in October 2024.

We are now preparing a consultation report which we are planning to have available on our website in mid-2025.

Consultation with the community is an important part of this strategy. We are committed to working with the community to help guide us on how we can continue to plan and investigate to improve the transport network.
