Project information
Background
Transport for NSW worked with Waverley Council to deliver the Bondi Junction Cycleway to give more people, more transport options. This means people of all abilities and means will be free to choose how they travel around our city – and we’re encouraging people to walk and cycle as part of their everyday travel.
To do this we’re partnering with councils across Sydney to create a connected cycling network including a new separated cycleway in Bondi Junction – a project funded by the Australian and NSW Governments and being delivered by Waverley Council.
Walking and cycling for commuting and short trips will help relieve pressure on local roads and public transport and are part of a healthy lifestyle for our community. The cycleway at Bondi Junction will also join with Centennial Park.
To improve safety for all users of Oxford Street, we relocated the Waverley Bus Depot exit point from Oxford Street to York Road.
With Council planning to extend the new cycleway past the bus depot this year, it was important we supported the delivery of this important project and managed bus movements for everyone’s safety. Covid-19 has seen a surge in the community using paths for walking and riding bikes across the city.
Tree and parking impacts
To ensure the safe movement of buses in and out of the depot, and to maintain road network efficiency, around 18 parking spaces on York Road were removed.
A Jacaranda tree, located outside the bus depot, was removed to allow for the new traffic lights. We will work with Waverley Council on opportunities for replacement trees and new parking spaces.
Operation of the new traffic lights will be monitored and adjusted to support traffic flow on York Road and Oxford Street as needed.
Completed work
Work included:
- installing new traffic lights and signage at the bus depot access on York Road
- upgrading existing traffic lights at York Road and Oxford Street to include a ‘B’ signal for buses turning right
- removing around 18 parking spaces on York Road
- removing and replacing sections of footpath
- line marking
- vegetation trimming and tree removal.
