April 2024 - Tamworth rail assets consultation is now complete and preferred future use options have been identified

Transport for NSW (Transport) undertook a community and stakeholder consultation on the unused West Tamworth Railway Station and the Tamworth Station Master’s Residence (Tamworth Rail Assets), from May 2023 to September 2023.

The consultation was conducted in two rounds to gather insights and feedback on the current and future use of Tamworth Rail Assets and analyse possible options. This consultation included the wider community as well as Government agencies, key community groups and Tamworth Regional Council.

The consultation has now been finalised and preferred strategies for both assets identified.

After considering a number of options in consultation with the community and key stakeholders, the preferred option for West Tamworth Railway Station is ‘removal of the asset with heritage interpretation’, and for the Tamworth Station Master’s Residence to ‘restore and repurpose by leasing via an Expression of Interest’.

Transport would like to thank all participants who took part in the consultation. The input has been invaluable and outcomes from this consultation will be used to guide the current and future use of these assets.

Project information

Background

West Tamworth Railway Station was built in 1878 as the first railway station in Tamworth. It played a significant role in the transportation of goods, such as wool, and together with Tamworth Station boosted the local economy.

The West Tamworth Railway Station building is a late Victorian type 3 second class roadside building and is listed on the Tamworth Regional Council’s Local Environment Plan (LEP).

From its conception, the West Tamworth Railway Station was temporary which is reflected in its construction and detailing.

The rail asset is located within West Tamworth’s industrial area, in an operational rail yard and neighbours a poultry abattoir.

A Statement of Heritage Impact undertaken in October 2027 deemed the current condition of West Tamworth Railway Station as very poor and unsuitable for refurbishment. Further to this, in October 2023 Transport was advised that lead based paint has been detected in the interior and exterior painted surfaces, as well as asbestos in the building.

The asset has been vacant since 1982.

What’s happening

Transport for NSW has completed a community and stakeholder consultation to identify values, issues, desired outcomes and determine the most appropriate management strategy for the asset.

After considering a number of options in consultation with the community and key stakeholders, the preferred option for the West Tamworth Railway Station is ‘removal of the asset with heritage interpretation’.

The preferred option was chosen as the asset has been vacant since 1982, is in a dilapidated condition which would require significant investment, and experiences frequent noise, unpleasant odour and air pollution due to its industrial location.

Heritage interpretation for the asset is planned with several options identified during the consultation including interpretive signage, conservation of salvageable fabric and historic items, preservation or restoration of platform or signal box, reinterpretation of the façade, etc. Transport will inform the community of its plans for heritage interpretation.

Next steps

Our next steps for this asset are to determine the extent of lead-based paint and for the network operator, UGL Regional Linx, to determine scope of demolition works and advise schedule.

Community information

Community consultation

Transport for NSW (Transport) carried out consultation with the community and stakeholders on the unused West Tamworth Railway Station and the Tamworth Station Master’s Residence (Tamworth Rail Assets), from May 2023 to September 2023.

The consultation was coordinated in two rounds to gather insights and feedback on the current and future use of Tamworth Rail Assets, analyse possible options, and determine preferred strategy. This consultation included the wider community as well as Government agencies, key community groups and Tamworth Regional Council.

An estimated 23,650 people were reached throughout the consultation with over 320 people providing feedback. The feedback showed that 62 percent of community participants did not know about these rail assets or their condition.

The consultation has now been finalised and preferred strategies for both assets identified.

Transport has reviewed and considered all input and feedback, and developed the Consultation Outcome Report which details our process, what we heard, outcomes, next steps, and answers to questions raised during the consultation.
