Wharf Maintenance Program
Project overview
Transport for NSW Maritime is carrying out maintenance across its ferry wharves over the coming months to ensure we continue to deliver safe, reliable infrastructure and services to passengers.

Because some work requires wharf closures, the use of noisy equipment or other impacts, we let our neighbours know of planned work well in advance.
We understand that maintenance and construction work will have an impact on you and your neighbours. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
From most types of work, we will distribute a 'notice of work' flyer directly to nearby residents one or two weeks in advance. For emergency works, we may be unable to distribute a notice before undertaking the work.
Plan your trip at transportnsw.info to see if this upcoming work will affect how you travel.
Wharves currently affected by maintenance activities are as follows:
Balmain East Wharf
The structural integrity of the seawall at the end of Darling Street, Balmain is failing, meaning the adjacent footpath is also unstable. To prevent further deterioration, Transport for NSW is preparing to remediate and restore the wall and surrounding area, including the footpath.
In the meantime, fencing has been put in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and passengers. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we undertake this critical work. Transport has undertaken detailed site investigations and sought advice from experts to determine the cause of the issue.
Assessments are ongoing and detailed design of the rectification work will start in early 2025, with construction expected to begin later that year. The work will take around six to eight months to complete and we will continue to monitor the seawall for any structural changes in the meantime.
There will be no impacts to ferry services, however the area near the seawall will not be accessible to the public until after the repairs are complete. Fencing will remain in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
We will continue to keep the community updated as the project progresses.
Cremorne Point Wharf
Transport for NSW Maritime will be carrying out important repair and maintenance work at Cremorne Point Ferry Wharf. To carry out this work, the wharf will be closed, and ferry services will be unavailable from Monday 26 May to Friday 12 December 2025.
What’s happening?
We’re upgrading the wharf to ensure it remains safe, reliable, and accessible for all passengers. The improvements include:
- a new gangway to provide safer, smoother boarding and disembarking for passengers, including those with mobility needs or prams
- a new roof on the pontoon, offering better protection from the elements while you wait for your ferry
- general structural upgrades to improve the long-term resilience and functionality of the wharf.
These works are part of our commitment to keeping NSW’s transport infrastructure in top condition and ensuring that local ferry services continue to meet the needs of the community, both now and into the future.
We understand this may cause some inconvenience and we truly appreciate your patience while we make these much-needed improvements.

Casino Wharf
The Casino wharf is currently closed until further notice due to safety concerns. Transport for NSW Maritime is working towards a repair.
Huntleys Point Wharf
August 2024 - Huntleys Point Wharf Update
Transport for NSW Maritime is carrying out essential maintenance works at Huntleys Point Wharf. These works aim to improve the long-term resilience and functionality of the wharf and ensure it remains safe, reliable, and accessible for all passengers.
These works are part of our commitment to keeping NSW’s transport infrastructure in top condition and ensuring that local ferry services continue to meet the needs of the community, both now and into the future.
What’s happening?
We had originally planned to reopen the wharf on 21 August. However, unforeseen delays with prefabricated parts, combined with recent weather and tidal conditions, mean the closure needs to be extended. As a result, ferry services will remain unavailable until Sunday 21 September, with services resuming on Monday 22 September.
We understand this may cause some inconvenience and we appreciate your patience while we continue these necessary works.
During the works, passengers can catch buses from Victoria Road. Please use bus route 500X for City express service with buses approximately every 5mins during peak periods, and route 501 for Parramatta services.
