April 2024 - work commencing on safety improvement works

Transport for NSW will commence safety improvement works at the intersection of Woodville Road and Guildford Road, Guildford from Monday 15 April (delayed from 7 April 2024 due to wet weather) weather permitting.

This work is further to intersection upgrade work completed in 2015.

The work will include:

  • installing right turn green arrows for Guildford Road motorists turning right into Woodville Road in both directions
  • installing new red arrows to allow pedestrians to cross the intersection safely while holding motorists on red arrows
  • trimming back the concrete median on Woodville Road to improve turning movements from Guildford Road.

The work is expected to be completed by Friday 24 May 2024

Our standard work hours will be from Sunday to Thursday, 8pm and 5am the next day.

We will not work on Friday nights, Saturdays or public holidays.

We will work up to five nights a week to complete the work as quickly as possible and to minimise the impact to the community.

Project information

Background

In 2015, Transport for NSW upgraded the intersection of Woodville Road and Guildford Road to improve traffic congestion and road safety at the intersection.

Congestion from Guildford Road vehicles waiting to turn left or right at the intersection into Woodville Road had resulted in long traffic queues and travel delays for motorists on both roads.

Several accidents had also occurred at the intersection due to the minimal sight distance for vehicles turning right out of Guildford Road.

Benefits

The project benefited the community by:

  • increasing travel through the intersection for both Woodville Road and Guildford Road motorists
  • reducing travel delays and queue lengths on Woodville Road and Guildford Road
  • increasing the safety of right turn movements from Guildford Road into Woodville Road.
  • improving pedestrian access and safety at the intersection by providing a fourth pedestrian crossing at the northern approach to the intersection on Woodville Road.

Key features

Intersection upgrades included:

  • modifying the lane configuration on Guildford Road approaches to the Woodville Road intersection to provide:
    • dedicated left turn lanes
    • dedicated through lanes
    • dedicated 50 (southbound) and 65 metre (northbound) right turn lanes
  • providing a fourth pedestrian crossing across the northern approach to the intersection on Woodville Road
  • removing the existing concrete medians on the Guildford Road approaches to the Woodville Road intersection
  • resurfacing Guildford Road on either side of the central median
  • relocating the light poles, traffic poles and traffic loops
  • adjusting kerbs and the pedestrian crossings
  • reinstating line and arrow markings.

To allow changes in lane configuration 15 parking spots on Guildford Road between Grassmere Street and Lough Avenue were removed as part of the works.

The project was funded as part of the NSW Government’s $246 million Pinch Point Program, which aims to reduce traffic delays, manage congestion and maintain travel times on Sydney’s major roads particularly during weekday peak periods.
