Great Western Highway, Doonside Rd, Brabham Drive

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government has committed over $825 million to pinch point projects which ease congestion, reduce traffic delays and improve travel times on Sydney's major roads.

Project information

Background

The NSW Government funded this proposal as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Point Program, which aims to reduce congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s busiest corridors.

Before December 2018, road users and local residents in Eastern Creek, Bungarribee and surrounding suburbs experienced heavy congestion when traveling along the Great Western Highway and connecting to the M7. Few turn lanes caused long wait times while motorists and deliveries to the industrial Arndell Park Huntingwood attempted to turn onto Brabham Drive and Doonside Road. These queues blocked through traffic on the Highway causing even more congestion at this busy ‘pinch point’.

Roads and Maritime started working on the intersection of Great Western Highway and Blacktown Road in June 2018 and this upgrade in Eastern Creek is now complete.

Since opening to traffic, this upgrade is delivering more reliable trips for all road users. With smoother transfers to the Great Western Highway and lower travel times to the M7, local residents have more options to travel to and connect with their loved ones, family and work across Sydney.

What did we do?

Improvements included:

  • Widening Great Western Highway from the centre median to create additional right turn lanes onto Doonside Road and Brabham Drive
  • Widening the existing eastbound and westbound left turn slip lanes from Great Western Highway onto Brabham Drive and Doonside Road
  • Adding two signalised pedestrian crossings on the north and south sides of the intersection.

Benefits

The key benefits to the community include:

  • Improving eastbound and westbound traffic flow and travel times on the Great Western Highway
  • Reducing congestion caused by right turning vehicles queuing in the through lane
  • Improving safety for pedestrians.
  • The completed work helps ease congestion along Great Western Highway.
  • The additional right turn lanes and widened eastbound and westbound left turn slip lanes allow more motorists to move along the highway unimpeded by vehicles turning onto Doonside Road and Brabham Drive.
  • Lowering travel times for future Sydney Zoo guests and deliveries to Arndell Park and Hungtingwood
  • Safety is also improved for pedestrians with additional pedestrian crossings at the intersection.

What is a 'pinch point'?

Pinch points are traffic congestion points, intersections or short lengths of road at which a traffic bottleneck exists slowing down the broader network. They cause a build up of traffic and travel delays at these spots and on the wider road network.
