Narellan and Appin Road intersection - completed

Roads and Maritime Services complete the intersection upgrade at Narellan Road and Appin Road in Campbelltown.

We thank the community for their patience while we completed this upgrade.

The NSW Government upgraded this intersection as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Point Program, which reduces congestion and improves travel times on Sydney’s busiest corridors.

Residents and motorists of Campbelltown, Bradbury and Ambarvale were experiencing congestion and long wait times travelling from the Hume Motorway through this central intersection to their homes. Pedestrians were crossing roads unsafely or more than necessary to connect to local shops, schools and hospitals.

Roads and Maritime started working on the ‘pinch point’ at the intersection of Narellan Road and Appin Road in May 2018 and now complete our upgrade in Campbelltown.

Since opening to traffic, this upgrade is delivering more reliable trips for all road users and pedestrians. With smoother and more reliable transfers through the vital intersection, shoppers and residents can return home from work, school and play to spend more time and connect with their loved ones.

Benefits to the community include:

• eased congestion with increased number of turning lanes able to move more motorists through the central Campbelltown intersection
• reduced travel times during journeys with better traffic flow from Narellan Road to local shops and homes off The Parkway, Oxley Street, and Appin Road
• improved safety and reduced travel times for pedestrians with the additional pedestrian crossing
• more reliable trips for locals travelling across Campbelltown to connect to the Hume Motorway, shops along Oxley Street and homes off The Parkway.

• A pinch point is a traffic congestion point, either at an intersection or on a short length of road, where a traffic bottleneck exists. They cause traffic build-up and travel delays at these spots and on the wider road network.
• More than $825 million has been committed to the pinch point program. Each project will ease congestion, reduce traffic delays and improve travel times on Sydney’s major roads.

Our work included:

• widening the southern side of Narellan Road and south western corner of Narellan Road and Appin Road to allow space for the new lanes
• converting the existing shared right and through lane on Narellan Road to a dedicated through lane assisting motorists accessing The Parkway and Oxley Street
• adding a second dedicated right turning lane on Narellan Road for motorists accessing Appin Road
• adding a fourth pedestrian crossing at Appin Road for improved pedestrian safety and better access to valuable community amenities
• repainting bike lanes for improved safety and visibility for cyclists and other road users
• replanting trees and other flora with fast growing natives for sustainable environmental benefit
• upgrading footpaths for an improved environment for local residents.

Roads and Maritime asked for your feedback in April and May 2017. We received comments from 11 community members and have responded to all community feedback in a consultation report.
