Princes Highway and Rockdale Plaza Drive, Rockdale

Transport for NSW will be starting work on Princes Highway between Lister Avenue and Rockdale Plaza Drive. We will be resurfacing the southbound lanes of Princes Highway and adding new line marking to provide an extended right turn bay into Rockdale Plaza Drive.

Approximately nine parking spaces will be removed on Princes Highway to accommodate the extended right turn bay.

To support industry and continue the delivery of critical infrastructure, the NSW Government has introduced new rules allowing construction sites, including public infrastructure projects, to operate on weekends and public holidays.

The Princes Highway is an important urban arterial road, and forms part of the A1 road corridor. The A1 connects the south coast of NSW and Wollongong to Sydney. It also provides access to major roads including the M5 Motorway, A3 King Georges Road, A36 Princes Highway (city) and M1 Pacific Highway.

The intersection is currently congested due to the Princes Highway being reduced to two lanes southbound between Lister Avenue and Ashton Street. Congestion is also caused by traffic waiting to turn right into Rockdale Plaza Drive westbound, queuing back and blocking the southbound through traffic on Princes Highway.

The benefits of the project include:

• improved capacity and efficiency of the Princes Highway corridor, specifically for southbound vehicles on Princes Highway near the Rockdale Plaza Drive intersection
• improved road safety by removing traffic waiting to turn right into Rockdale Plaza Drive, from the southbound through lanes on Princes Highway.

The work will be carried out over six night shifts between Tuesday 19 May and Wednesday 3 July 2020, weather permitting.

Our night work hours will be between 9pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday.

Changes to hours have been made to facilitate social distancing on the construction sites and support the health and well building of workers.

The work may be noisy at times, but we will do everything we can to minimise these impacts to the local community.
