Sydney Metro City Art

Integrated public art creates a vibrant storyline across 7 Sydney Metro City stations.

This series of artworks celebrates seven stations in Central Sydney and North Sydney. The final large-scale artworks are integrated into prominent entrance locations to heighten the individual identity of each station place. Where there are multiple station entrances, artworks include elements at each entrance.

The Storylines theme developed for this series created the framework for unique and meaningful artworks at each station by highlighting the mosaic of vibrant places and diverse communities along the route highly accommodating of artists’ diverse practices and approaches. The degree of integration required strong collaboration between Artist teams, Sydney Metro and Sydney Metro Contractors to realise. Whilst artworks were selected to compliment the stations’ design, they were also envisaged to bring an additional layer of creativity and diversity to these stations.

At Martin Place Station, three existing artworks were salvaged from the original P&O Building. Sydney Metro undertook a deaccessioning process for these 3 works, stored them and ensured they were restored and installed in the new project in consultation with the artists estates, and consultants. This ensured the longevity of the artworks, and they remained in the same area for which they had been commissioned.
