Project overview

'Water Journeys' is an artistic treatment for the Circular Quay Transport Customer Service Centre that aims to increase visibility of Aboriginal culture and heritage.

Artist Danielle Mate's Water Journeys is an artistic treatment for the Circular Quay Transport Customer Service Centre, aiming to increase visibility of Aboriginal culture and heritage while improving the experience for customers and visitors.

Water Journeys looks at vessels and their significant role both historically and today, as well as the movement that canoes, ships, and ferries bring to the harbour and the importance of their functions. The artwork provides a journey for visitors of the Service Centre by slowly introducing new elements and colours as you move through the interior space.

Artist statement

Both today & historically, Circular Quay / Warrane has been a significant convergence point for travel, on land and on water. This artwork represents the different vessels that use this harbour and have done so across time. It represents canoes, ferries, ships and boats, the movement that they bring to the water, the lines they create, the patterns, the noise and the connections created between people. Running through this work from start to finish is a black line with white dots, this represents the continuous presence of culture.
