Latest news

September 2023 - Second round of consultation now underway

In July 2023, we invited feedback on the future use of West Tamworth Railway Station and Tamworth Station Master’s Residence. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide comments during our first round of consultation.

We reached over 23,600 people and recorded over 288 participants during the first consultation period.

Key points raised included:

  • Many community members and stakeholders were unaware of these rail assets and their current condition.  Participants showed a greater awareness of Tamworth Station Master’s Residence because of its proximity to the centre of Tamworth and recent previous consultation.
  • Overall, participants prioritised activating Tamworth Station’s Master’s Residence as a short-term action, identifying that improvements to West Tamworth Railway Station are more complex and require a longer-term outlook.

A second round of consultation is currently underway to test options and gather additional feedback for these sites.

August 2023 – First round of consultation has now closed

Our first round of consultation is now closed for the West Tamworth Railway Station and Tamworth Station Master's Residence.

A second round of consultation will be carried out later in the year to test options and gather additional feedback.

All feedback is important to us and we would like to thank you for taking the time to provide your comments.

Project information

Background

West Tamworth Railway Station was built in 1878 as the first railway station in Tamworth.

It played a significant role in the overland transport of goods (primary wool) and the boost it gave to the local economy (together with Tamworth Station).

It is not deemed to be state significant; instead, it has been given local historical significance under Tamworth Regional Council's Local Environmental Plan.

From its conception, West Tamworth Railway Station was temporary. This is reflected in its construction and detailing; a single-story symmetrical cottage with verandah rooms at each end.

The building is 1 of 28 known examples in NSW of a Victorian Type 3 Second Class Station Building.

A Statement of Heritage Impact has deemed the current condition of West Tamworth Railway Station as poor, and it has been vacant since 1982.

The West Tamworth Railway Station is not considered rare or an intact representative of its type.

Master's Residence

Tamworth Station Master's Residence was purchased after its construction and therefore does not conform to the typical railway structures from this period.

It was built in 1877 as the manse for the nearby Wesleyan Church and was separated from the church by the construction of the railway when it extended from Tamworth in 1881.

The Tamworth Station Master's Residence is listed on the State Register as part of the West Tamworth Railway Station, yard group and moveable relics.

Despite being vacant for more than ten years, the current condition of the Tamworth Station Master's Residence is adequate.

Community consultation

Transport for NSW is carrying out extensive consultation to understand community and stakeholder priorities for the current and future use of West Tamworth Railway Station and Tamworth Station Master's Residence.

The objectives of the consultation are to:

  • inform stakeholders about the project and process
  • listen to key stakeholders and community members
  • understand community and stakeholder values
  • explore opportunities for how heritage sites can be better utilised in response to community values
  • identify possible options for the buildings and sites
  • make clear the next steps and areas for further investigation.

During our first round of consultation, we will be exploring the community's values and attitudes towards the two assets.

A second round of consultation will be carried out later in the year to test options and gather additional feedback.

All feedback is important to us and we would like to thank you for taking the time to provide your comments.
