Community feedback sought on safety improvements at Bookham

Community feedback is being sought on new designs to improve safety at the Hume Highway intersection with Conroy Street at Bookham.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said following community feedback in 2020 and 2021, further investigations were carried out to inform refined designs for the intersection upgrade.

“During these investigations, cameras captured 681 unsafe incidents from December 2020 to May 2021, ranging from illegal turns and dangerous driving to vehicles blocking lanes while queuing to enter the highway,” the spokesperson said.

“The proposed design will reduce the risk of unsafe driver behaviour by removing access to vehicles turning right onto the highway’s northbound lanes directly from Conroy Street.

“Instead, motorists will be channelled via a dedicated lane to a new U-turn bay at the southern end of the intersection before they join northbound traffic for a safer re-entry to the highway.”

A fatality occurred at this location with a further 10 crashes recorded in the 2012-2017 period. The majority of these crashes occurred while negotiating the intersection.

“These improvements follow on from safety treatments installed in 2021 which included new signs, line-marking, median and turn arrow painting to help remove confusion for drivers,” the spokesperson said.

Transport for NSW will be holding a drop-in session on Thursday 15 June between 2pm and 5pm at the Bookham Rest Area to provide the opportunity for community members to view designs and have their questions answered by the project team.
