Agricultural vehicles

An agricultural vehicle is an agricultural implement or agricultural machine, as defined under the Heavy Vehicle National Law. Examples of agricultural vehicles include harvesters, tractors, augers and conveyors.

An agricultural vehicle is considered a Class 1 restricted access heavy vehicle if it, together with its load, does not comply with a prescribed mass or prescribed dimension requirement.

Registration

Agricultural vehicles may be registered under conditional or seasonal registration. Information on registration is available on the nsw.gov.au website

Permit

Vehicles seeking access to roads that are not on the approved network must obtain a permit for travel.

Note: Oversize light vehicles and light combinations that exceed prescribed dimension limits may be eligible to travel on the NSW road network under the NSW Light Vehicle Agricultural and Indivisible Item Exemption Notice 2024 (PDF, 266.38 KB) if they meet the requirements of the Notice.

Transporting oversize baled agricultural commodities

The New South Wales Class 3 Baled Commodities Dimension Exemption Notice and the New South Wales Class 3 Drought Assistance Dimension Exemption Notice allow heavy vehicles carrying specified baled and rolled commodities to operate outside the statutory height and width requirements so long as they meet certain conditions.

The:

  • New South Wales Class 3 Baled Commodities Dimension Exemption Notice allows eligible vehicles carrying baled commodities to operate up to 2.7m wide and 4.6m high.
  • New South Wales Class 3 Drought Assistance Dimension Exemption Notice allows eligible vehicles carrying baled or rolled hay to operate up to 2.83m wide and 4.6m high in certain circumstances.
