Traffic Engineering

Traffic engineering and traffic management cover regulatory, warning and advisory signs, lines, signals and other traffic control devices and treatments that help to regulate and manage safe road user behaviour on the NSW road network.

Transport has adopted the Australian Standards and Austroads guides as its primary reference documents for traffic management and engineering best practice.

However, Transport practice does depart from the Australian Standards and Austroads guides in some areas. These departures, along with enhanced practices and extra explanatory information, are captured in a range of technical documents, including:

  • TfNSW supplements to the Australian Standards and Austroads guides
  • Technical manuals and guidelines
  • Technical directions

These documents are publicly available on the Transport Standards Portal.

Traffic Engineering also publishes fact sheets that provide advice to practitioners on specific topics. These fact sheets are published on this page.

NSW Traffic Signs Register

The Traffic Signs register is a library of all standard road signs used in NSW.  Where applicable, legislative and primary technical references are provided, as well as sign designs and standard sign size information.
