Project overview

With the completion of stage 1 of the roadwork along Frenchs Forest Road in October 2018 to coincide with the opening of the Northern Beaches Hospital in 2018, Frenchs Forest has changed a lot in the last few years.

Project information

Background

The NSW Government has upgraded the roads around the Northern Beaches Hospital and improved capacity along Warringah Road. The hospital is located close to Warringah Road, Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway, which are major arterial roads serving Sydney’s northern suburbs. Together these arterials currently carry about 140,000 vehicles per day.

Now complete, the upgrade provides a better travel experience and increased traffic capacity around the hospital precinct as well as on the major arterial roads in the area to cater for the anticipated population growth and traffic volumes following the opening of the hospital.

Ferrovial York Joint Venture (FYJV) was engaged by Roads and Maritime to deliver the project. The project was completed in May 2020.

The Northern Beaches Hospital Connectivity and Network Enhancement (CaNE) project is made up of two stages:

Stage 1 - Hospital Connectivity

Stage 1 was about providing key connectivity and traffic capacity around the new hospital by upgrading Frenchs Forest Road East, West and Naree Road from a single to dual carriageway, improving pedestrian access as well as bus stop upgrades servicing the hospital. Stage 1 was completed and opened to traffic in October 2018.

Stage 2 – Network Enhancement

The focus of stage 2 was on broader network enhancements. This included upgrading Warringah Road for improved road network performance, reducing congestion around the hospital, and the construction of a 1.3 kilometre long underpass and three underpass bridges at the Forest Way, Hilmer Street and Wakehurst Parkway intersections. It also included key intersection improvements, bus stop upgrades, new shared paths and new pedestrian bridges. The Warringah Road underpass was opened in March 2020.
