Avoca Drive upgrade at Kincumber

Reviewed

Project overview

The Australian and NSW governments are investing $130 million to upgrade Avoca Drive, Kincumber.

The proposed upgrade will improve traffic flow and deliver infrastructure for active and public transport access on Avoca Drive through the township of Kincumber.

Project information

Background

Avoca Drive is around 13 kilometres long and is a key east-west road on the New South Wales Central Coast. It provides critical links between the southern coastal suburbs, Terrigal Drive and to the M1 Motorway and rail line via the Central Coast Highway.

Avoca Drive through the township of Kincumber is used by up to 30,000 vehicles a day, with heavy vehicles accounting for around six per cent of daily traffic.

During peak travel times motorists experience congestion and slow travel times on Avoca Drive, particularly around the intersection of Bungoona and Carrak Roads, which provides access to Kincumber Shopping Centre, food outlets and the hotel.

The Australian Government has committed $100 million towards upgrades to Avoca Drive alongside the NSW Government’s commitment of $30 million.

This will help to improve safety, traffic flow and travel times for motorists to cater for existing and future traffic flows along Avoca Drive. The improvements will further provide pedestrian and cyclist facilities and improvements to public transport access, helping to increase multi-modal connectivity.

When complete, the project will reduce congestion and create a safer road environment for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Benefits

  • Improve current and future traffic flows
  • Provide more reliable travel times for motorists
  • Improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists
  • Improve pedestrian and cyclist access increasing active transport connectivity
  • Provide better access to public transport improving multi-modal connectivity
  • Provide better movement of freight.

Next steps

Transport for NSW will continue developing options for the proposed upgrade to seek feedback from the community.

Transport is targeting display of options to seek community feedback by mid-2024. This will assist in identifying the preferred option for the project, before commencing concept design and environmental assessment to ultimately gain project approval.

Timing for construction is not confirmed and would likely be delivered in priority stages consistent with available funding.
