Project overview
The NSW Government is delivering major improvements to maritime infrastructure and facilities state-wide, to help the boating and wider community safely access, use and navigate our inland and coastal waters.
Transport for NSW (TfNSW) which now coordinates and manages the maritime functions of DPIE-Crown Lands through the Maritime Infrastructure Delivery Office) is inviting public feedback on the new Addendum Review of Environmental Factors, 2021 (AREF) which addresses a new approach to aspects of the Bermagui Harbour and Channel Dredging project.
The project expects to dredge around 27,000 cubic metres of sand.

Transport for NSW sought community feedback on the AREF in March this year, as part of project planning to ensure that it gives due consideration to the local community’s needs.
We thank those members of the community who took the time to respond, and you can find the submissions report under Project Documents on this page.
Back in May of this year, Transport for NSW conducted an open tender process to find a suitably qualified contractor to carry out the work described in the AREF. Unfortunately, due to various factors, a suitable contractor could not be identified after the tender process. This will cause a delay in the start of work.
Transport for NSW is now seeking alternative options to complete the project. We will let the community know as soon as we find a solution.
Project information
Background
Bermagui Harbour provides berthing for a number of commercial fishing vessels supplying the Bermagui Fisherman’s Co-operative, many recreational boats, Marine Rescue NSW and also provides marine servicing and slipway facilities for the local area. The Entrance Channel provides the only access to the Bermagui River and harbour.
The most recent dredging campaign was undertaken in 2020 from Area 1 and part of Area 6. The material dredged from these areas was initially placed on Horseshoe Bay Beach as stated and assessed in the Project REF and AREF. Approximately 12,000m3 was subsequently removed from the beach and is stored in the designated stockpile area west of the harbour.
Before this dredging campaign, the harbour was dredged in 2002. Materials from within the harbour were pumped to a bunded disposal site immediately west of the slipway. Clean sands from the Entrance Channel were used for the renourishment of Moorhead Beach.
