The new Cabarita Wharf

The NSW Government upgraded Cabarita Wharf as part of the Transport Access Program. Due to the local conditions and design of the existing wharf structures it was possible to maintain ferry services to Cabarita during construction. Work was completed on Friday 21 December 2018.

The upgraded wharf and interchange was designed to provide customers with an improved public transport experience. The new wharf provides:

  • capacity for additional ferry services
  • protection from the wind, rain and sun
  • improved seating and waiting areas
  • improved safety for customers
  • quicker and more efficient ferry boarding and disembarking
  • effective wayfinding signage and lighting
  • new lighting
  • improved pedestrian, bus and vehicle access and movement around the interchange.

Car park improvements

In March 2018 we invited community comments on the Cabarita Wharf car park improvements which would provide 15 new car spaces, a new retaining wall and a new turning circle.

Work to upgrade the car park was completed in July 2019.

Background

The upgrade is part of the major progressive upgrade of ferry wharves across Sydney Harbour which aims to improve Sydney’s ferry services for customers, delivering accessible, safe, comfortable public transport infrastructure with capacity for extra ferry services. New and upgraded wharves and interchanges are being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program.

This program has already delivered new facilities at Neutral Bay, Rose Bay, Balmain (Thames Street), Huntleys Point, Cremorne Point, Mosman Bay, Drummoyne, Balmain East, Sydney Olympic Park, Pyrmont Bay, Meadowbank, McMahons Point, Chiswick, Cockatoo Island and Milsons Point.

Community engagement

Initial consultation for the Cabarita Wharf upgrade was carried out in 2015. The feedback received helped us to understand our customer’s views about the current facilities and priorities for improvement. We carried out community consultation on the concept design for the new wharf in May and June 2017.

The Review of Environmental Factors was on display for public feedback in November and December 2017. Roads and Maritime has prepared a report responding to all of the issues raised in submissions received.
