The upgrade was designed to accommodate the high volumes of traffic currently travel through the intersection, particularly during morning and afternoon peak periods. This included queuing caused by turning vehicles blocking the progress of through traffic.

Project outcomes

  • The eastern side of Canterbury Road was widened by 3.5 metres between New Canterbury Road and Wattle Lane to allow for a new right-turn bay.
  • The middle northbound lane on Canterbury Road was changed to a shared through and right turn.
  • An existing pedestrian fence and signs on the eastern side of Canterbury Road were removed.
  • The existing the left-turn slip lane on Old Canterbury Road and the existing pedestrian refuge island were removed
  • Right turns from Canterbury Road onto Wattle Lane were prohibited to improve safety.
  • Extending the ‘No Stopping’ zones on New Canterbury Road and Old Canterbury Road, and extending morning peak traffic restrictions to improve traffic flow.
