Giinagay Way and Valla Beach Road intersection improvements

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is funding vital road safety improvements at the Giinagay Way and Valla Beach Road intersection, Valla Beach.

Transport for NSW Valla Beach Road intersection.

Latest news

In response to ongoing community concerns about crashes at the intersection, Transport for NSW installed a Road Safety Incident Investigation Camera on Tuesday 1 July for one month to automatically detect near-misses, capturing short video footage of each incident. It also collects data on vehicle speeds, traffic volumes and types of vehicles.

Road safety analysts will use this information to better understand driver behaviour and the frequency and nature of incidents at the site to help determine future road safety interventions.

No personal data will be collected. Licence plates and images of faces will not be recorded. This is not an enforcement tool and no fines will be issued. For more information (insert link to relevant notification).

Project background

Initial safety improvements were carried out in 2023 at the intersection to include the completion of minor changes around the slip lane at the intersection.

In response to ongoing community concerns about crashes at the intersection, Transport installed traffic monitoring cameras and completed speed surveys in September and October 2024. In April 2025 a number of short-term safety improvements were implemented as follows:

  • a reduced speed limit of 60 km/h
  • improved line marking to include:
    • adding a hold line on Valla Beach Road to confirm where vehicles should store before turning right
    • installing traffic separators to provide clearer directions for motorists, during poor light conditions and wet weather
    • enhanced the signage at the intersection to include adding a 25km/h exit speed sign on the slip lane.

Longer-term solutions are being investigated to ensure the safety of all road users.

Next steps

We are planning driver workshops and a video animation to help guide motorists on how to use the intersection safely and will provide the community with further details when they are available.

Transport continues to monitor the intersection and will update the community as investigations continue.
