King Street Cycleway
Project overview
King Street is an important connection to the Sydney city centre for people riding bikes, connecting to the Pitt Street Cycleway and bike routes to the city’s east, south and west.
The King Street Cycleway project is extending the existing separated cycleway between Clarence Street and Pitt Street.
The King Street Cycleway will improve the connectivity of bike networks in the Sydney city centre and supports a continuous and connected cycling network to enable more people to safely ride their bikes as part of their everyday travel.

Background
Transport for NSW is extending the existing separated cycleway on King Street between Clarence Street and Pitt Street. Providing this important missing link will improve connectivity of bike networks in the Sydney city centre, by connecting:
- west through to Darling Harbour and Pyrmont
- east to the City of Sydney's new two-way separated cycleways on Castlereagh Street and College Street, which will connect into the future cycleway on Liverpool Street and Oxford Street.
The map below outlines the key changes as part of the King Street Cycleway project.
Bike riding is the most sustainable form of transport, contributing to great places, cleaner local environments, healthier lifestyles, and providing economic benefits to local neighbourhoods.
By encouraging more people to choose walking or bike riding for everyday journeys, we will improve neighbourhoods and the environment, reduce car use and traffic congestion, support busy local economies, and improve the general health of our communities.
NSW Government’s Future Transport Strategy sets the vision for safe, healthy, sustainable, accessible, and integrated journeys in NSW.
This Active Transport Strategy draws on the Future Transport Strategy and its vision for walking, bike riding and personal mobility. The Strategy provides a plan to guide planning, investment, and priority actions for active transport across NSW.
Benefits
- Delivers a connected cycleway network across the CBD
- Encourages more people to ride bikes
- Provides a safe option for cyclists
- Connects cyclists to key public transport hubs
- Relieves pressure off our roads
By encouraging more people to choose walking or bike riding for everyday journeys, we will improve neighbourhoods and the environment, reduce car use and traffic congestion, support busy local economies, and improve the general health of our communities.
Construction
To build the new cycleway, our work will include:
- setting up a temporary work site
- realigning the kerb to accommodate a separated bi-directional (two-way) cycleway
- road widening and footpath adjustments
- building the bi-directional cycleway
- permanently adjusting traffic lights to accommodate the new cycleway
- resurfacing and road marking
- service relocations and stormwater upgrades.
Our work will be completed in three stages, these dates are weather permitting:
Stage 1: Clarence Street to York Street (from April to around August 2025)
- conducting investigation work and surveys to understand ground conditions and confirm the location of services.
- adjusting the kerb, footpath and road to create space for the new cycleway. This includes widening the road and narrowing the footpath.
- permanently adjusting the traffic lights.
Stage 2: George Street to Pitt Street (from around June to November 2025)
- adjusting the kerb, footpath and road to create space for the new cycleway.
- installing underground stormwater drains and services.
Stage 3: Clarence Street to Pitt Street (from around October to January 2026)
- building the cycleway and installing cycleway separators.
- laying the final road surface, installing signs and painting permanent road marking.
Work hours
Our work needs to be carried out at night to limit disruption to traffic and reduce safety risks to our workers, pedestrians and motorists.
Night work will take place up to 5 nights a week, between 8pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting. We will not work on public holidays.
Minimal daytime work may be required to complete some tasks.
Some continuous weekend road closures may be required during construction. Advance notice will be provided before any significant disruptions.
Managing our impacts
We aim to manage our work to avoid impacts to the community and the environment. During construction, road users, residents, and businesses may experience temporary impacts, including:
- increased construction activity, with workers, vehicles, and machinery operating in the area
- temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits to ensure worker and public safety
- footpath diversions and pedestrian detours, with signage and traffic controllers in place
- noise and vibration from machinery, particularly during some ground investigations, excavation and road resurfacing. The noisiest activities, such as saw cutting and jack hammering, will finish at midnight.
- minor dust and debris, which will be managed with regular site cleaning.
