Mount Victoria Slope Stabilisation

Reviewed

Project overview

Ventia, on behalf of Transport for NSW, is carrying out slope stabilisation work on the eastbound carriageway of the Great Western Highway between Fairy Bower Road and Victoria Falls Road at Mount Victoria.

Mount Victoria Slope Stabilisation

Slope stabilisation work on the eastbound carriageway near Fairy Bower Road at Mount Victoria will provide a permanent fix for this section of highway. Heavy rainfall during March 2022 resulted in significant cracking and a shallow failure at the crest of slope, affecting the eastbound lane of the road over the rail bridge.

Emergency stabilisation work was carried out between March and April 2022 to keep this important regional route open and keep traffic moving between Sydney and the central west and western regions of the state.

Work on the slope stabilisation will take about seven months to complete, weather permitting, and will be carried out between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. There will be no work on Sundays or public holidays.

What work are we doing?

  • Establishing a temporary work site
  • Strengthening an existing track behind the slope
  • Locating and protecting any existing underground services
  • Removing 41 trees and trimming other vegetation for safe access. Mulch created will be reused on site and more than 150 trees will be replanted
  • Installing horizontal drains across the slope
  • Replacement of road shoulder pavement
  • Replacement of existing guardrail, which has moved
  • Installation of gabion/steel mesh retaining wall
  • Restoring the site when all work is finished.

Traffic impacts

The Great Western Highway will remain open while we work, with no traffic delays expected.

Static signs will be installed to inform truck movements in the area. Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs.

Should any works impact traffic, we will notify the community before this is carried out.
