Project overview

The Australian and NSW Governments have committed $515m to deliver a new bridge over the Hawkesbury River at North Richmond and associated traffic improvements, to reduce traffic congestion between Richmond and North Richmond and improve evacuation options and connectivity during flooding events.

Transport for NSW has been developing the New Richmond Bridge project over a number of years. This significant and much needed project will reduce traffic congestion between Richmond and North Richmond and improve evacuation options and connectivity during flooding events, like the ones the Hawkesbury community has experienced in recent years.

The proposed project stretches between Blacktown Road at The Driftway, through to North Richmond and includes several elements, with the new bridge over the Hawkesbury River the key feature that will improve travel times.

The New Richmond Bridge project includes:

New Richmond Bridge - Stage 1

The New Richmond Bridge Stage 1 project will improve two key intersections on The Driftway at Blacktown Road and Londonderry Road.

New Richmond Bridge - Stage 2

The New Richmond Bridge Stage 2 project will deliver a new Bridge over the Hawkesbury River at North Richmond.

Current status

Stage 1

Transport for NSW has awarded a major construction contract to BMD Constructions to deliver the New Richmond Bridge Stage 1 project. Construction is expected to start in the coming months and be complete by 2027.

Stage 2

Transport for NSW is currently considering community and stakeholder feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors for the proposed upgrade. Subject to environmental approval, major construction is expected to start in late 2026 and be complete by 2029.
