June 2025 – Contract award and start of work

Transport for NSW has awarded a major construction contract to BMD Constructions to deliver Stage 1 of the New Richmond Bridge project. Stage 1 will deliver safety and flood resilience benefits on The Driftway by upgrading the intersections at Blacktown Road and Londonderry Road.

Work will begin from July 2025 to prepare and set up the site compound and other areas. Stage 1 construction is expected to be complete in 2027.

Project information

Stage 1 construction will focus on improving safety and flood resilience at the two key intersections on The Driftway including:

  • new roundabout at Londonderry Road: The upgrade will improve the intersection to a new roundabout that will also include an extra southbound lane. The improved intersection with extra southbound capacity will improve the Londonderry Road flood evacuation route to help traffic flow during flooding events
  • new roundabout at Blacktown Road: At the Blacktown Road end, the roundabout will improve safety at the intersection and a new bridge across Rickabys Creek will improve flood resilience.

Shoulder widening on The Driftway would be completed as part of Stage 2B of the New Richmond Bridge project, when further funding is available.

Background

Transport for NSW has been developing the New Richmond Bridge project. This significant and much-needed project will reduce traffic congestion between Richmond and North Richmond and improve evacuation options and connectivity during significant flooding events.

Stage 1 early work was completed in 2024. This work included building and relocating additional Sydney Water mains at various locations along The Driftway between Blacktown Road and Londonderry Road.

The proposed project received environmental approval in March 2022. For further information please see the Review of Environmental Factors and Submissions Report located in Project Documents below.
