Newcastle Light Rail

Project overview

The Newcastle Light Rail will be a high capacity, frequent service through the city centre.

Key benefits

  • Six stops in all – at Wickham, Honeysuckle (near TAFE), Civic, Crown Street, Market Street and Pacific Park
  • A high capacity, frequent service through the city centre – designed to help reduce traffic congestion

The Light Rail is part of a $650 million program to revitalise Newcastle’s city centre. The Newcastle Urban Transformation and Transport Program will focus on the city and the waterfront, and deliver better transport connections.

Major construction of the light rail is expected to continue until 2019, when the service will begin operating.
