Pacific Highway, Charmhaven

Work on the safety improvements is scheduled to start on Sunday 16 May, weather permitting.

We will be working between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday nights for one week. Work will then be carried out between 7am and 5pm on weekdays until November, weather permitting. For more information and a copy of the final design please download the May 2021 project notification (PDF, 724Kb).

The NSW Government provided $3.54 million through the Safer Roads program to improve safety and reduce the risk of crashes on the highway between Moala Parade and Lowana Avenue.

In the five years to June 2019, there were 41 crashes along this section of the highway, including 26 rear-end crashes. 30 of these crashes resulted in injury.

Transport for NSW invited the community to comment on a proposal in early 2020, and changes have since been made to address some of the issues raised following additional investigations and design work.

An additional $850,000 has now been allocated to the project for additional improvements, as part of the jointly funded Federal Stimulus Road Safety program announced by the Australian and NSW governments in March 2021.

The project involves

• Building a U-turn bay south of Jetty Road, for motorists wanting to travel north on the Pacific Highway
• Providing dedicated right turn bays for motorists turning into Jetty Avenue and Awaba Avenue
• Installing a wide painted central median to provide greater distance between opposing traffic north of Awaba Avenue
• Banning right turn movements in and out of Norah Avenue, Windermere Avenue and Munmorah Avenue. These intersections will become left in and left out only.
• Banning the right turn out of Parkside Drive. Access for emergency vehicles will be permitted.
• Banning the right turn from the Pacific Highway into Lowana Avenue (the right turn movement from Lowana Avenue onto the Pacific Highway will still be permitted)
• Widening the western side of the Pacific Highway to accommodate the new right turn bays and medians
• Installing new signage and improving line marking.

We will notify the community of any night work during delivery of the project.
